“In your search after manhood go not to those delightful latitudes where "summer is blossoming all the year long," but rather to The Hardy North, to Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, to the coldest and flintiest parts of New England, where men work gardens with gunpowder, blast rocks to find places to plant potatoes; where, for six months of the year, the earth is covered with snow and ice. Go to the states which Daniel Webster thought good enough to emigrate from, and there you will find the highest type of American physical and intellectual manhood.”
The knitwear journey begins at farms across the country. After shearing our wool is collected at CHARGEURS WOOL of Jamestown, South Carolina. Here wool goes through a process called scouring which rids the wool of all impurities. Raw wool is then carded and combed or "top-made". Chargeurs specializes in topmaking, a process where wool fibers are rigorously combed-through so that all the fibers line up perfectly. When the fibers line up perfectly, they all grip together giving our superfine merino its robust quality.
After topmaking, wool is shipped to JAGGER BROTHERS of Springvale, Maine. Located well within “the hardy north” Jagger Brothers has been a family business for over 100 years. Specializing in worsted spinning, they are the last remaining American worsted spinning mill. Here our wool is steamed before workers run it through their spinning machines which take it from the raw topmade wool to our superfine merino. Then, after a final inspection, our wool is shipped out to be dyed.
An hour away from Jagger our superfine merino arrives at SACO RIVER DYEHOUSE of Biddeford, Maine. Operating in a historic mill buildingm, Saco River specializes in skein dying, a labor intensive, hands-on process requiring careful handling of the wool, precise measurement of dyes, and careful calibration of temperature and water flow to preserve the natural loft and soft hand of the yarn. Saco River takes pride in being the only GOTS certified organic dyehouse in the USA.
The journey is almost complete when KEFF NYC recieves our dyed wool. Keff is the only full-fashion knitting mill on the East Coast, and one of the only two remaining in the USA. Only a year old, Keff is a NYC start-up with the mission to bring premium quality full-fahion knitting back to the USA. This is made possible with help from their tremendously skilled handworkers and the very best Stoll knitting machines. Their full-fashion knitting sets them a step above the rest. When Keff finishes a piece, it’s ready to be worn for generations to come.
